An early publican of the ‘Sands’ was Oliver C. Ullyott.  He was Born in in 1869 in Penistone to Joe and Jane Ullyott, the seventh of eight children.

He is recorded on the 1891 Census at ‘The Horse & Groom’ public house, 187 Manchester Road, Linthwaite. Occupation: Groom.

(The publican was Tom Bradley, living at the Horse & Groom with his wife Anne, their two young children Daisy 3, William 2 and one female domestic servant, Mary Jane Crane, aged 21)

In 1895 Oliver, at the age of 26, marries Annie Priestley, from Huddersfield.

But the marriage was short lived - on the 13th February 1897, Oliver dies, at the young age of 28. He leaves his wife his effects and £59 12s. 10d.

There is also a record of an Anne Ullyott marrying in Huddersfield sometime between July and September 1897.
